The Dad’s Guide to Hair Brushing

Feb 20. 2019 by Shaver Shop Team

Fatherhood requires you to learn many new skills, but brushing a girl’s hair? It doesn’t sound easy. If you are reading this and desperately need a few hot tips, we are here to help you with the basics.

The first step is to make sure you’re using a detangling brush rather than a comb or a hard bristle brush. A proper detangling brush with soft, flexible bristles should glide through the hair and therefore preventing potential damage.

Take small sections at a time and gradually work your way up the hair. Be mindful to not pull at the scalp – ouch! You can avoid this by holding the hair tightly above the part you are brushing. Don’t tug too hard at knots, you’ll definitely hear about it from your little one. Try to gently pull them apart with your fingers as a brush can sometimes make it more painful if it’s a tricky one.

Remember it’s always going to be easier to brush washed and conditioned hair. However, when brushing it dry it’s best to style the hair in a way that avoids knots like a low ponytail, bun or plaits. Also, have a spray water bottle ready on hand or a detangling spray to help tackle those unwanted knots.

Go for it dad, you got this. 💁‍♂️

Expert tip: For little girls or boys with very long hair, try putting their hair in a low ponytail before bedtime which can help reduce the chances of painful tangling in the morning.
