How To: Stay On Top Of Your Oral Care At-Home

Mar 16. 2023 by Shaver Shop Team

Maintaining good oral hygiene is critical for your overall health and well-being. Good oral hygiene is essential to be able to enjoy life to the fullest ensuring you can eat, speak and smile without any active disease, discomfort or embarrassment.

The ultimate at-home oral care tip is introducing an electric toothbrush to your dental hygiene regime. Why are electric toothbrushes better for your routine? They’re more effective at removing plaque, are safer for your gums and are proven to be more effective than a regular manual brush.

A common question is what features do I actually need in an electric toothbrush? Do I need all the bells and whistles? Well, not necessarily, it purely depends on your personal needs. But some key important features include a pressure sensor, quadrant timer, and a lithium-ion battery.

  • A pressure sensor reads the amount of pressure placed on your teeth and gums by the way you handle your toothbrush. Too much pressure can lead to gum and enamel damage, so it’s important to never scrub with an electric toothbrush, simply hold the toothbrush with your pointer and middle fingers on top of the handle, your thumb underneath, and slowly glide the brush around your mouth.
  • Quadrant timers buzz every 30 seconds for each quarter of your mouth (ie. top right side, bottom right side etc.) to let you know how long to brush for. Focus your brushing for 10 seconds on the outside of your teeth, 10 seconds on the top, and 10 seconds on the inside.
  • Finally, a lithium-ion battery will last longer per charge than a regular nickel-metal hydrate battery and will usually last much better in the long run. Read on for some of our electric toothbrush favourites, all of which include these three important features!

Oral-B iO9 Electric Toothbrush with Travel Case
The iO9 Electric Toothbrush combines powerful yet gentle micro-vibrations with Oral-B’s unique dentist-inspired round brush head design for a professional clean feeling every day. The iO9 provides a deep clean while being super quiet and gentle for ultimate comfort. The best part? The smart pressure sensor not only tells you when you’re applying too much pressure but also when you’re applying the right amount of pressure. Combine this with 3D tracking through the Oral-B app to guide you to your perfect clean, the iO9 Electric Toothbrush is the ultimate solution to your at-home oral care routine.

Oral-B Smart 7 7000 Electric Toothbrush
Give yourself a personalised clean with the Smart 7. With five brushing modes, including Daily Clean, Sensitivity, Whitening, Gum Care and Deep Clean, this brush can be personalised to your needs and includes a premium travel case.

Philips Sonicare Prestige SenseIQ 9900 Electric Toothbrush
Sonicare’s most advanced electric toothbrush, the Prestige SenseIQ 9900 has intelligent features to ensure an optimal full-mouth clean. As you brush, SenseIQ technology senses pressure, motion, coverage and more up to 100 times per second. It then adapts the intensity if you push too hard to ensure the optimal pressure for your brushing style. The intelligence of SenseIQ takes the guesswork out of brushing modes so you can experience effortless care and better brushing over time.

Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean Whitening Electric Toothbrush
The Sonicare ProtectiveClean Whitening Electric Toothbrush combines sonic pulsations with quick brush strokes to pulse water between teeth to give a deep clean while brushing away plaque on the surface of the teeth. This brush is also a great option for first-time electric toothbrush users, as for the first 14 days of use the brush slowly increases the power intensity up to full power on the 14th day, to help you adapt to the feeling and strength of an electric toothbrush.

Extra essentials
For added hygiene, which you may not have thought about, check out the Steripod Hygiene System. It’s a cover for the head of your toothbrush to keep it hygienic and protected from bathroom bacteria & odours for up to three months.

Did you know dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush head every three months? When the bristles become worn it reduces the cleaning effectiveness of the toothbrush. For extra savings, check out the value packs of heads in our refills range here.
