How To Start Long Term Hair Removal (IPL) At Home With SmoothSkin Muse

Jun 03. 2019 by Shaver Shop Team

Heard about the benefits of IPL, but not sure where to start? Maybe you’re over shaving and waxing and are ready for something a little more permanent? At-home IPL is the easiest, most cost-effective way to reduce hair growth, leaving you with more smooth and less stubble. Ready to get started? Read on to find out how.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light and when used correctly, this revolutionary technology provides long-term hair reduction. Basically, the melanin in your hair follicle absorbs the light from the IPL device and heats up, which then disables the hair follicle, preventing regrowth.

IPL is different to laser in terms of treatment area size, intensity, pain levels and safety. A laser generally has a smaller treatment area compared to an IPL device and emits a single wavelength of light. IPL devices produce a wide range of wavelengths (colours) of light to produce a single white flash of light.

Why should I try at-home IPL?

The benefits of IPL are pretty major! Reduced hair growth means less shaving (heading towards no shaving at all!), smooth skin, less stubble and no more ongoing salon costs. Plus, you can’t beat the comfort and convenience of doing it at home.

Will it work for me?

At-home IPL is suitable for people aged 18 and over, depending on your hair and skin colour. We recommend the SmoothSkin Muse for a safe, powerful and easy way to get started with at-home IPL, however it’s important to note this device is not suitable for the darkest skin tones.

SmoothSkin Muse is not suitable if you are undergoing a self-tanning regime (artificial or natural). There may be photosensitive properties in the self-tan moisturisers that could affect your skin’s reaction to IPL or your skin may be extra sensitive following sun exposure. So if you’re keen to try IPL, best to put the bottle down and/or stay out of the sun for at least four weeks prior.

There are some skin conditions and medications that might mean the SmoothSkin Muse is not for you. For example, certain medications can make your skin more sensitive and a flash of intense pulsed light could cause injury. Please consult with your GP prior to use if you think this might apply to you.

How do I get started?

Exclusive to Shaver Shop, the SmoothSkin Muse is uniquely user-friendly – with unlimited flashes, the continuous flash and reload function means you can treat your whole body (legs, underarm, bikini and face) in 20 minutes. Plus, the continuous skin tone sensor checks your skin tone before each flash and only activates if it’s safe to do so. Phew!

Post treatment quick tips

Once complete, there a few things to remember:

1. Stay out of the sun as your skin is a lot more susceptible to getting burnt.

2. It is advisable to wear loose clothing to allow the area to breathe and avoid irritation.

3. Within the first day or so after treatment, you skin may look or feel irritated which is normal. Use a soothing lotion if irritation occurs or see your GP if symptoms persist.

4. Don’t pluck or wax the hair which comes through after the treatment, manage the growth by shaving until your next application.

5. As experts in IPL, SmoothSkin recommends your treatments should be once per week for 12 weeks, then top up as required, around once every four to eight weeks.

Expert tip: Before you get started, make sure you shave the treatment area first - do NOT wax, pluck or epilate. You want the hair follicles intact in order for the device to detect and destroy. Plug in your IPL device and start treating! There’s only one button to worry about (or two if you are on the sensitive side and want the gentler option), and no complicated settings or need for an application gel.
